General Garden Basics: Garden Diagrams

This document is now superseded by blog post 2015 Survival Document and Diagram.  This document is 'floating document' among the 2015 documents.  The best chance of finding it is to look in the current month of 2015.

This page was revised on September 14, 2014 to clarify the order in which hosta arrived and were shifted around in this garden.  The following table lists the additions over the season.  The diagrams below this list shows their arrangement by Diagram Letter (A through D).  The PIB numbers relate back and forth between the listing and the arrangements.  This was a major rewrite, so I hope I have all my details right.

                      Diagram   Height   Diameter
Variety of Hosta      PIB        S   L    S   L .

Popcorn               11          6  10   24  36
Princess Wu Wu         1         being edited out during 2014
Sum and Substance      2         --  28   72 108
T-Rex                  3         28  36   36  96
‘venusta’             21          4   6    6  12
Vulcan                11         10  18   24  36
X-Ray                 14          4   8    9  12

  • Hosts Blue Mammoth, Popcorn, and T-Rex were replaced.  The rhizome sets for each WERE intact so had they been left alone they might have emerged later in the year!
  • Princess Wu Wu was originally thought to be Empress Wu.  This was due to the gardener's own confusion between the two specimens.  Diagram D: It is being removed NOT because of this confusion but because of needed garden space for other hosta below.

Brooklynn's Baby Doll 24          4   6   --  12
Gemstone              23          5  10   12  24
Irish Mist            25          6   9   --   9
Rainbow's End         22          4  10   12  24

  • I believe that Brooklynn's Baby Doll arrived mislabeled.  Due to its size alone this ought to be the correct name.  Hosta Baby Doll is smaller in diameter.
  • These four were unexpected arrivals.

Chartreuse Wiggles    Diag. C 28  4  10    9  12

                      Diag. D 26
  • Chartreuse Wiggles was a gracious whim on my part.  It was one of those plants I had wanted over the years - and it was offered.  Had I really thought hard twice I would have realized the situation I was about to put myself into!
  • Little Devil was also added to at this time, and plans were made for two others which never arrived (Diagram C numbers 26 and 27)!

  • Blue Mammoth, and Frosted Mouse Ears were added to.
  • Stilletto, and The Razor's Edge were planned hosta; the other 6 were unexpected.

Additional notes about these diagrams:
  • Note that Image A, Number 19 is moved to the back right.  The move was prompted by both arrangement needs, and that the hosta had passed through 'Fairy Ring' stage.
  • The numbers added in Image C are renumbered in Image D; as numbers 26 and 27 are never acted on from Image C.  This looks confusing but in the end the count is really a total of 34 varieties in Image D.
  • Image C, Number 28 becomes Image D, Number 26.  The placement is correct in Image D.
  • Image D, Number 27 represents two plantings of Imp,
